Identify Feelings
Equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions offer an active, hands-on approach to treating mental health problems. The horses are very perceptive and react to the client’s behaviour and emotions with no bias, providing a clear picture of what the client is experiencing.
For example, if a client walks toward a horse angrily, the horse will move away from them. This is because the horse’s left eye sends a signal to the part of their brain that processes potential threats.
Work Through Trauma
Horses have a very sensitive response to people, and they are astute at picking up on energy vibrations caused by body language. They are able to detect if someone is upset, angry or insecure. They will react accordingly and offer information without judgment, helping clients identify their feelings. Addicts often don’t know what they are feeling, so working with a horse can help them recognize that they are having certain emotions.
Develop Confidence
Horses are calming animals that can help individuals develop confidence in their ability to overcome challenges. They teach individuals to face their fears and anxiety in a safe environment, such as when they are in close proximity with a large animal, and then transfer those skills to day-to-day life.
Equine therapy, also known as equine-assisted psychotherapy or hippotherapy, helps clients with a wide range of mental health conditions. For example, it can help with stress management, anger management, and personal accountability. It also teaches the importance of respect for both humans and animals.
